The first Shanin Space Day was held in MSSES

The first Shanin Space Day – a meeting of like-minded people and friends – took place in March in the library of the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences. That day, we were remembering Teodor Shanin – the co-founder of MSSES and its first rector. Shanin’s destiny and values have always, and especially now, served as our inspiration, support, and guidance.

The main outcome of the Shanin Space project, which has won the third grant competition of museum initiatives and exhibition projects of the Russian Jewish Congress, is the ‘Teodor’s Islands’ exposition created by the forces, intelligence, advertency, and attentive approach of the curator Nadya Pantyulina, architects Kiril Ass and Nadya Korbut, and Kamil Zhurakulov’s multinational team. The islands represent the material and emotional memory of Teodor. They signify an important new direction for memorial exhibitions. They are precise, exquisite, and powerful all at the same time. They are, without exaggeration, an important contribution to the exposition business as well as the preservation and memorialisation of Teodor Shanin’s legacy. It was a solution for the mission, formulated by the project manager Olga Karpova, to create something more than just a memorial study – a space under the working title “Non-museum” that would be more open for interaction as well as subtle and new in terms of the format. All this resulted in six Islands – Teodor’s ideas-meanings-projects brought out to the surface and embedded into the library’s space and work. Despite the Islands’ laconic and metaphorical nature, each one of them will eventually have deep layers of Teodor’s and MSSES’ mediagraphy – a digital archive with video and audio materials, documents, photographs, memories, and a continuation in the present day full of events and interactions. The immense work on the assembly, attribution, and understanding of the archive has already begun. You may join in as volunteering participants by sending your request to community@universitas.ru.
