MSSES hosted the XX International Conference for Young Scholars “Vectors of Russia’s Development” on 15-17 April

  • 27.04.2022
“Vectors of Russia’s Development” is an annual conference organised by MSSES students. It’s a conference for young scholars that allows them to exchange new ideas and methods of scientific comprehension of reality, bring their positions together, and establish professional and academic contacts with their like-minded peers. That is why the conference is attended by undergraduate and graduate students as well as young scholars from various Russian universities.

Originally, the organisational committee only comprised graduate students and alumni. This year, the team of organisers welcomed undergraduate students who successfully held their sections on anthropology and sociology of medicine as well as issues of international security.

Yet another change introduced by this year’s organisational committee was the cancellation of the overall theme of the conference. MSSES residents decided that the current situation in the academic world calls for a diverse approach, and the section heads should have the opportunity to follow their research interests. Thus, the conference continues to be a space for experiments, as was designed by Teodor Shanin.

This year, discussion topics of most concern were the following:

  • “Pain is seeking a doctor”: to the anthropology and sociology of health and medicine – section head – Varvara Grechukhina, a third-year student of the undergraduate programme ‘Contemporary Social Theory’
  • Cultural Heritage: Modern Approaches and Practices of Use – section head – Ksenia Lavrentyeva, a second-year student of the graduate programme ‘Project Management’
  • The USSR and the External World – section head – Alexey Kotelvas, a second-year student of the graduate programme ‘History of Soviet Civilisation’
  • Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy – section head – Maria Denisova, a first-year student of the graduate programme ‘Practical Psychology’
  • Relevant Issues of International Security – section heads – Maksim Nikitin and Polina Maksimova, fourth-year students of the undergraduate programme ‘World Politics’
  • Behavioural Finance: Transdisciplinary Approach and Directions of Research – section head – Mikhail Zeldin, MSSES alumnus and PhD student of the Ariel University
  • Psychological Resilience as a Resource in the Context of Social-Economic Restrictions – section head – Marina Varich, MSSES alumnus
  • “Don’t Touch It If It’s Not Broken” or Which Law Institutions Need to Change – section head – Lia Barsegyan, a graduate student of the Faculty of Law

The conference was joined by participants and speakers from various Russian educational institutions, such as HSE University, RANEPA, MGIMO, European University, MSU, Svyato-Filaretovsky Institute, Free University, Saint Petersburg State University, and Russian State University for the Humanities as well as our colleagues from foreign universities: Brown University, University of Washington, Leipzig University, Durham University, etc.

The section programmes are available on the conference website.

The conference’s organisational committee expresses gratitude to the MSSES administration for continuous help and support.
