The 10th International Scientific and Practical Conference “World-Class Scientific Publication – 2022: From the Present to the Future”, organised by the Association of Science Editors and Publishers (ASEP) took place on 26-29 April 2022.

Conference participants discussed such issues as the development of Russian scientific journals in current circumstances, improvement of their positions in international informational systems, and development of a national system for evaluating the effectiveness of academic research.

A roundtable “Russian Language in Scientific Publications in Today’s World” was held within the conference and moderated by the Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences I. B. Korotkina, head of MSSES’ Interfaculty Department of English Language and Director of RANEPA’s Academic Writing and Communication Centre at the invitation of the ASEP President O. V. Kirillova. The roundtable was one of the first major events that focused on academic writing in Russian language and its application in Russian-language academic texts. The talks not only raised common issues related to the lack of Russian academic writing but also demonstrated practical aspects of teaching writing and editing academic texts. Many of the attendees were surprised to discover what methods are used to clear the text of inarticulate syntax, tautology, and inaccurate vocabulary; how to structure an informative title, and why the abstract has priority over the whole text. In the course of the discussion, the issue regarding the importance of the English-language version of these elements was raised as well as the issue of translating the terms, especially when it comes to research in sociology and humanities. One of the roundtable’s main conclusions was the need to teach academic writing based on the models and techniques that have been working effectively in the West for a long time as applied to English language, but apply them in Russian and to Russian language, which will allow to bridge the gap both between Russian and foreign academic publications and Russian and foreign scientific journals.
