The main objective of the program is to train specialists in the history of Soviet society. The graduates can work as academic researchers or public historians. The program focuses on the history of Soviet citizen.

Behavioral Economics

Program Director — Manukhina Svetlana
This is the partnership program of two universities -- RANEPA (faculty of Economics) and the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences (faculty of Practical Psychology) with validation from the University of Manchester (UK). The Faculty of Economics of RANEPA provides economic training of the students and the Faculty of Practical Psychology of MSSES ensures psychological training.

Fashion Studies

Specialization "Fashion Theory" is the first in Russia educational program aimed at systematic study of fashion as an important phenomenon of modern culture. The program focuses on the interdisciplinary study of the phenomenon of fashion as a semiotic code linking clothing, body and culture, and represents a unique fusion of theoretical disciplines and project-oriented courses

Russian as a Foreign Language&Customized Education

We offer language training for students of Russian at any proficiency level - beginner, intermediate, and advanced - and also to heritage speakers.

Political Philosophy

The Master’s program "Political Philosophy" is unique in that it combines social philosophy (education in classical and modern social and political thinking) and political science (training and modern approaches to the study of political processes)

English Studies

Head of the English Department — Irina Korotkina

Department of English is a division of the Moscow School which provides language support for all the faculties. The department’s primary objective is to help students overcome language barriers by developing skills that allow for quick and accurate navigation of academic and professional English-language sources as well as essay writing. The department also prepares students for the IELTS exam.

English Studies consists of two integrated programs: English for Academic Purposes – EAP and English for Professional Development - EPD.

Media Management

The theoretical base of the program provides knowledge about the development of modern media project business models, as well as management of media projects in various spheres of social, cultural and business communications.

The practical part of the program allows students to obtain the skills necessary for producing projects in a variety of media forms: film, TV, social media, online gaming, urban navigation and much more. A key feature of the program is the mastery of basic media technologies associated with the processes of creative production.

Urban Studies

This program is intended for representatives of the government, non-profit and commercial sectors, as well as entrepreneurs in the field of culture, urban planning and management. Student will learn how to implement projects related to spatial development and revitalization of the urban environment. Courses of the program include subjects such as political economy, social and transport infrastructure, city environment and psychology. Student will also be brought up-to-speed on the latest trends in urbanization and development.

Participants of the program will gain familiarity with international and Russian experience in the development of concepts and spatial development strategies of all types, regional and urban master planning, development of case studies and concrete practices of the field of new visual images, branding and creative transformation of the urban environment, professional terminology used in territorial law, business planning and management at different levels, tools and technologies, socio-cultural design.



The Law program at the Faculty of Law is focused on in-depth study of the most important areas of jurisprudence with regard to the Russian market of modern legal education. Master's degree in law requires a high level of creativity, ability to work independently, and the skills to solve scientific problems in a particular field of legal knowledge.

The Faculty of Law at the Moscow School of Social and Economic Science (MSSES) was founded by Professor W.E. Buttler, a distinguished comparitivists of our day. As a pioneer of Western master’s courses on law in Russia, the Faculty of Law assumes the highest standards of British postgraduate education and the program has been validated by the University of Manchester since 1995.


Experience from the last 15 years has shown that the graduates of the program are competent sociologists, researchers and analysts, possessing knowledge of theoretical apparatus as well as instruments of modern sociological approaches.

Counseling Faculty


The main teaching disciplines of Applied Psychology focus on: society within the family and as a group, personality and character, business, and national culture. It gives significant attention to human capital assets, management engineering, counseling methods and psychotherapy. Non-residents who successfully pass the acceptance tests study at this faculty at no charge as their tuition is sponsored by charity funds.

The main aim of the program is training specialists with internationally recognized Masters of Arts in Counseling in the spheres of HR management, corporate psychology, individual and family counseling. This course is the only Russian counseling program officially recognized by the British leading university – the University of Manchester (UK). According to British standards, the Master degree is awarded to the specialists who are successful both in practical skills (namely the counseling itself) development and in research work.

Education Management


In 2000 the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences began an initiative to establish the Center for Educational Policy Studies (CEPS) (now the Faculty of Educational Management). The general goal of the faculty is to assist in the modernization of the Russian education system. This goal is reached through training specialists in the key areas of educational practice, and especially in the sphere of education policy. The aim of the faculty is to create a pool of highly skilled analysts and experts who are able to analyze and shape the educational policy of their own regions – as well as those of the whole country. 

International Politics

Program Director — Zharkov Vasily

The aim of the program is to assist the new generation of international relations experts who are proficient in modern social theory, command professional skills of a researcher or analytical expert, possess advanced academic writing and oral communication abilities, and are in high-demand in Russia and abroad. The program is geared towards Russian citizens as well as foreigners who have a command of both the Russian and English languages and are interested in Master courses in international relations.

Public History: historical knowledge in modern society


The aim of this MA course is to train specialists who possess the tools to conduct historic research and who are able to adapt that historic knowledge for the general public. This specialization, which is not only new for Russian universities, but also not very long ago appeared in European MA courses, takes into consideration the growing interest of mass media in history and the increasing curiosity of society about museum collections, places of historical significance, and the role of historic knowledge and education in up-to-date political and cultural fields. Those who graduate successfully will receive the MA degree (Master of Arts) from the University of Manchester (Great Britain). This degree will also be accepted in Russia. 

Cultural Management

The Faculty of Cultural Management has been at the MSSES since 1998. The Faculty is an educational platform containing a modern and fast-developing science-based school and an innovative laboratory, where the newest approaches of science are practiced. The faculty offers the students a course of professional retraining in the program “Cultural Management”; British Magister courses, Cultural Management with award of the Master of Arts degree, The University of Manchester and Russian Magister courses on specialty “Project management” (specialty 080500 “Management”).
