Master’s Programs in Sociology

Since its inception, the program has been implemented by the Faculty of Social Sciences and is the basis of the faculty’s educational tradition. Currently it is one of the few Russian masters’ programs in sociology, aimed at providing a fundamental sociological education in the field of social theory and epistemology of the social sciences.

Experience from the last 15 years has shown that the graduates of the program are competent sociologists, researchers and analysts, possessing knowledge of theoretical apparatus as well as instruments of modern sociological approaches.

1. British Master’s Course + Russian Professional Retraining
2. «Fundamental Sociology» (in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration)
3. «Modern Methods of Social Investigation» + British Master’s Course.


British Master’s Course + Russian Professional Retraining 

A university diploma is required for admission.

Scholarships are not available

Application period: From May 20th to August 22nd
Dates of entry exams: June 26th, July 22nd, August 26th
Entry exams: Sociology (oral exam), English language test
Duration and cost of the program: 1 year – 150,000 rubles, 2 years – 188,000 rubles. Payment can be made on an individual schedule and in several installments (depending on the needs of the student). The first installment in the amount of 25% of the total tuition needs to be paid 10 days prior to the start of the program.
Class schedule: 3-6 times per week, Monday-Friday: 6:30pm - 10:00pm, Saturday: 9:00am - 4:00pm

Program starting date: September 22

  • Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Manchester, UK
  • Certificate of Completion of the Russian Professional Retraining Program from the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences.


«Fundamental Sociology» (in collaboration with the School of Public Policy of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration)

MSSES Master’s Programs in collaboration with the University of Manchester in Sociology allow students to receive an education in the best Russian and British traditions.

Programs focus on intensive study of classical and contemporary sociological theories in conjunction with the formation of practical skills. As a result, the graduates are prepared for analytical work with a wide range of foreign and domestic sources of information and can be realized in scientific research, marketing, consulting and other areas.

Full and part-time study is possible.

Full-time study

Full-time students attend classes for two years and take 2 compulsory and 9 elective courses. Students form their own individual curriculum based on their research interests. The program involves a large amount of independent work. During the study period students may participate in projects at the RANEPA research centers and other partners.

A full-time Master’s Program ensures a full social package for the student.

A university diploma is required for admission.

Scholarships are available. A deferment for military service may also be provided. Visiting students may receive housing in the Residence Hall.

Program cost (without scholarship): 300,000 rubles for 2 years. Payment can be made on an individual schedule and in several installments (depending on the needs of the student). The first installment in the amount of 25% of the total tuition needs to be paid 10 days prior to the start of the program.

Part-time study

Part-time students attend lectures and seminars only their freshman year. The second year is dedicated to research and involves workshops, field work, and projects at the RANEPA Center for Sociological Research. In addition to defending a thesis, the main task of the second year is to write and publish an article in Russian or foreign peer-reviewed journal.

Part-time study is idea for students who have a sufficient level of theoretical training in order to start independent research and the production of scientific texts on the second year of study.

A university diploma is required for admission.

Application period: From May 20th to July 18th (with scholarships), to August 22nd (without scholarship)

«Modern Methods of Social Investigation» + British Master’s Course 

Program advantages:

1) The program allows you to combine classical theoretical training with extensive immersion in practical research. Graduate students have the opportunity to participate in research projects and practical training in leading sociological agencies of the country (VTsIOM, FOM).

2) A master’s level study implies active involvement in scientific work. Annually MSSES organizes conferences such as: "The Russian Ways", "Development vectors of modern Russia", "Glazychevskie readings", and "Continuations of Grushin". Graduate students have the opportunity to participate in these events as speakers and listeners, or as organizers and moderators. Students may also participate in master’s sociological retreats, which are organized twice a year by the program faculty. Professors also assist students in preparing scientific publications using the written work they submit throughout the program.

3) Graduates will receive two diplomas: once from the Russian Presidential Academy and another from the University of Manchester, UK.
